CMD Prepares for Growth with Two Key Promotions

CMD, the UK manufacturer of power distribution systems, workstation power modules and ergonomic monitor arms, has made two significant internal promotions to prepare the business for delivery of an ambitious growth plan.

The CMD leadership team has been strengthened by the promotion of former internal sales manager, Jamie Cox, to the new role of operations manager. His new role includes warehouse management and regulatory compliance. Jamie has responsibility to support the delivery of the company’s strategy by developing CMD’s supply into new and existing markets, whilst updating CMD’s structures and processes.
Jamie joined CMD eight years ago from a project management background and has already been involved in numerous compliance, standardisation and efficiency improvement projects at the company. The internal sales and customer service teams will continue to report into Jamie and he will report into CMD’s general manager, Jon Holding.

Former design engineer, Jonny North, has been promoted to the new role of design manager at CMD, with responsibility for driving new product development and ensuring both customer feedback and commercial considerations are embedded in the product development journey. His new role is part of wider changes for CMD’s design and innovation capability, bringing together the bespoke solutions and new product development expertise in a single team. A key element of Jonny’s role will be to connect the product development and sales functions within CMD to ensure the customer’s requirements are prioritised in the design process.
Jon Holding, general manager of CMD comments: “We have a talent tracker in Jamie who has been on our radar as a candidate for increased responsibility and promotion for some time. His attention to detail and organisational skills are exceptional and will be pivotal in delivering our strategy for both developing our core markets in the UK and extending our exports. “Jonny is not only a very talented designer, he is also an excellent communicator, which makes him an ideal person to develop a customer’s brief, present our concepts to them and collaborate with them as designs progress. His can-do approach, ability to operate under pressure and track record for getting things done also make him the perfect fit for this new role. He has enviable situational leadership skills that enable him to work effectively with both clients and every individual on the CMD team, which will help us deliver a number of the major projects currently in the pipeline.”

CMD Ltd Delivers Agile Working Solution with New 65W Capsule Plus

CMD Ltd, the specialist in power and connectivity solutions for commercial interiors, has developed an ideal on desk workstation module for agile working and hot desking environments, with the launch of Capsule Plus.

Building on the popularity of the Capsule workstation power module, which provides a stylish and compact fixed format solution available from stock, Capsule Plus offers up to PD65W of charging power, enabling USB laptop charging. With two power sockets, along with type A and C USB fast charging, Capsule Plus enables a plug and play approach to hot desking, with ample power distribution for powering or charging two devices at once.

Stephen Roberts, head of sales at CMD Ltd commented: “Most commonly used laptops require 25-50W of power to charge them, depending on their specification, so our 65W Capsule Plus offers ample to charge both a laptop and a mobile phone at the same time. Where two devices are drawing power simultaneously, the type C charger takes priority, providing up to 45W of power, with the remainder distributed through the type A connection.

“As more companies move to an agile working model, allowing people to combine working from home with hot desking in the office, the convenience of being able to power up with a simple cable will be increasingly important. The launch of Capsule Plus continues our focus on developing solutions that respond to evolving working practices, serving the office interiors market and the end user.”

Available in a choice of black or white, the Capsule Plus includes two empty keystones for retrofitting of HDMI and USB keystone couplers, enabling data or A/V connectivity within the power and charging module. The Capsule Plus specification also includes two resettable 3A circuit breakers and a pre-installed 1.5m lead to male GST Wieland connector, which can be used to connect directly to the female GST socket on CMD’s Elite+ or Conti under desk workstation modules. Alternatively, Capsule Plus can be connected directly to a UK plug socket using an additional starter lead.

Capsule Plus is supplied with a c-clamp to fix the module to any desk thickness between 11mm and 30mm, making them suitable for a wide range of furniture choices.

Stephen Roberts adds: “The new Capsule Plus rethinks the capabilities of one of our most popular on desk workstation power modules, offering specifiers even more solutions within the CMD Ltd range to meet the changing needs of office occupiers. It provides the perfect solution to align workstations with the latest generation of devices and workplace routines and continues our track record in delivering high quality products.”

CMD Invests £1/4 Million in New Machine as Part of Factory Upgrade

CMD Ltd, the specialist in underfloor power systems and workstation connectivity, has invested in a new £1/4M TRUMPF CNC metal punch which will be used in the production of a wide variety of CMD’s products at the company’s Rotherham factory as part of an asset renewal strategy.

Suitable for handling sheet metal between 0.9mm and 3.0mm thick, the new machine will replace one of two existing CNC machines, while the other legacy machine remains in service, ensuring uninterrupted production at the company while the new asset is installed and commissioned. Once the old machine has been fully decommissioned, it will be shipped to new owners in Lithuania.

The CNC metal punching machines are used in the production of a wide variety of products, including CMD’s underfloor Power Hub System, floor boxes and grommets and many of the brackets and components across the range.

Roger Byrne, Head of Manufacturing at CMD Ltd explains, “To maintain the quality of our output and ensure we have the capacity and resilience to provide uninterrupted, reliable supply to our customers, we are retiring our old CNC machine to make way for a new model. The new asset will require less maintenance and ensure rapid availability of any spare parts, reducing the risk of unplanned downtime and ensuring we continue manufacturing at full capacity to meet demand.”

The new TRUMPF CNC Machine will be fully operational at CMD’s factory by the end of October, following installation, commissioning and training of the company’s team. It will be both quieter and more energy efficient, contributing to the company’s environmental goals and ISO 9001 accredited quality systems. A full summary of the new machine’s features and capabilities is outlined in this video:

Two new operators have been appointed and join the company’s existing CNC team and they will all undergo four days of external training provided by TRUMPF.

General manager of CMD Ltd, Jon Holding adds: “Our commitment to customers is to provide innovation, quality and reliability of supply. Replacing our equipment before it reaches the end of its service life is a key element in delivering that promise”.

“This investment will help us maintain high standards of quality and consistent output and we will continue to prioritise the efficiency of our UK manufacturing operations to ensure we remain a trusted supply chain partner.”

CMD Ltd Plays Essential Role in Electrical Fit Out at London’s Prestigious Office Development

CMD Ltd, specialist in workplace connectivity and ergonomic solutions, has provided a flexible and high-quality power distribution network for The Ray, a prestigious office development in London’s Farringdon.

Well-known for being the former site of The Guardian newspaper, The Ray now stands as an 83,000ft² office development characterised by a modernised warehouse aesthetic, with level two now occupied by a global social media company.

The electrical installation of level two for the social media company was carried out by contractor Moyne London, working for developer, Viridis Real Estate. The project began as a standard plug and play installation to take the power distribution network to workstations and a number of phone booth style meeting pods. After the hiatus of the pandemic and considering the company’s changing requirements to accommodate social distancing, the layout had to be restructured quickly and efficiently. Working collaboratively alongside Moyne London, CMD Ltd provided their 63A Betatrak underfloor powertrack power distribution system, which includes a click fit method for quick installation and a capacity to configure around bends and corners, which makes it very versatile. Moyne London also used CMD Ltd’s Rotasoc under desk modules which can be easily altered due to their modular design and 3600 continuous rotation with a 32A internal busbar.

Peter Goode, contracts manager at Moyne London comments: “The flexibility of the Betatrak underfloor powertrack and CMD’s customer service both paid dividends when the layout was changed mid-project. We were able to alter the location and number of tap offs, grommets and floor boxes to suit the new workstation arrangements. CMD worked with us to revise the installation quickly so that we were able to make up for lost time straight away.”
