Changing Fortunes for Power Generating Team

Changing fortunes for power generating team
Britain’s latest clean energy power station boasts changing rooms to match, after operator Carrington Power specified Crown Sports Lockers to fit out the staff facilities.
The 40-strong team running £710m Carrington Power Station, Greater Manchester, enjoys a little more luxury after temporary steel units, used by more than 800 personnel during the four-year build programme, had been stripped out.
“Steel lockers did the job during construction but when you are talking about a project worth the best part of £1bn, you need to reflect that in working conditions,” says Leigh Greenwood, Mechanical Technician for Carrington Power, “and that includes staff changing rooms.”
After going out to tender for replacement lockers, Leigh specified bespoke furniture manufacturer Crown for the fitout. Now everyone from office assistants, operations staff, team leaders and managers have their own storage solution.
Crown fitted 60 full-length timber lockers in light oak – with “clean and dirty” compartments to hang day clothes and workwear – bench seating and grey laminate shower doors in the existing wet area ensure staff have a comfortable, welcoming environment in which to change.
Just four lockers were fitted in the female changing area as “only two women work here”, Leigh explains, 16 in the mens, 22 in the operations rooms and another 16 for managers and team leaders.
“Price wasn’t the deciding factor,” Leigh states. “We wanted quality too and felt Crown offered the fit-for-purpose facility we were seeking.
“I was impressed with their professional approach throughout the project, coming on site several times, communicating promptly and fitting the whole job within a week with minimal disruption.”

ABL’s Rob Thornton Wins the AAT Student of the Year Award!

We are extremely excited to announce that Rob Thornton who works in the finance department at ABL won the AAT Student of the year award 2017!

Rob was 45 when he started his AAT course with a company called Starting Off. During the day Rob would look after his children and then work nights at a warehouse. Rob was determined to take his working life in a different direction and decided on trying accountancy.

In order to get some work experience Rob went to an agency and volunteered even whilst working night shifts! The agency helped him get an administration role at ABL. Rob’s role started in April 2017 where he also took a day of release to continue his level 2 qualifications. He continues the journey and has taken advanced learning loans to fund his Level 3 and now Level 4 qualifications whilst taking the role of Credit Controller at ABL.

“Rob really takes the AAT qualification seriously, to the extent that he starts his studying at 5am! He was with me through levels 2 & 3 and always showed a determination to get first time passes in every unit – a goal that he achieved! Rob stands out to me because he set his mind on a change of career and now is an indispensable part of the finance function at the company where he works. He also showed a genuine interest in all aspects of his studies, rather than “I’m only doing this to pass the exam”. Steve Clarke, Tutor for levels 2 and 3.

Rob’s Level 4 tutor, Paul Tutty comments that “Rob is exceptionally keen, he has a determination to absorb as much information as possible; he is determined to make up for lost time. His homework is exceptional and always more than required, again his quest for knowledge is insatiable. His class contributions are thoughtful, perceptive and interesting. Rob has an empathy for others a quality rarely seen today”.

Paul McKenzie, Rob’s Manager at ABL has also made the following comments:

“I have worked with Rob now for around 14 months, and his passion for learning, and commitment to ensuring that work is completed accurately and to the highest standards, cannot be questioned. Rob consistently delivers work to the highest standards using a real “thoroughness”, sound judgement, and attention to detail. Rob is a real asset to our company, ABL.”

We are extremely proud of Rob who has demonstrated that hard work really does pay off!

Crown Lockers Add “degree of difference” at UWE Centre for Sport

When the University of the West of England’s (UWE) Centre for Sport decided to upgrade its changing areas it wanted the same style of provision – only different.

The existing lockers fitted when the Centre opened a decade ago were showing their age. Doors were missing and sharp edges were starting to cause health and safety issues.

“We wanted a new feel and floor but with the same kind of provision,” explains Laurence Gully, the Centre’s Operations Manager for Estates and Facilities.

UWE attracts 10,000 students to its Frenchay Campus, north of Bristol, alone and more than 4,000 of those live on site.

The Centre hosts hockey, squash and other indoor sports in a leading edge double sports hall. Fifty student sports teams use the facilities for training and competition, and there’s a state-of-the-art members gym and strength and conditioning hub.

“Besides outdoor users, 3,000 students, staff and corporate and community members use the gym so our changing rooms are rammed,” adds Lawrence.

The locker specification is part of a wider branding plan for the Centre, including refreshed colour palette.
After canvassing customers for comments, Lawrence approached suppliers for quotes – bespoke furniture manufacturer Crown Sports Lockers proving the standout choice.

“Only Crown offered a different take, thinking outside the box to create more floor space so easing circulation round the rooms,” Lawrence reports, “while picking up the red and black theme of the University logo.”

The Centre preferred traditional pound coin locking rather than digital – Crown ensuring all lockers take the new pound coin so there are no worries about converting locks when the old coins cease to be legal tender in October 2017.

Crown fitted a total of 45 two-tier lockers in both male and female changing rooms. Solid oak timber slat seating mounted on stainless steel legs complete a finely appointed and finished fitout, along with hardwearing non-slip vinyl flooring. They are sizeable enough to hang clothes as many members use the gym before work so they have to store suits, shirts and so on. Installation took up just 10 days of the overall six-week project.

The CDW countdown heats up!

Clerkenwell is less than a month away and with the festival celebrating its 8th year in May 2017 (23-25), it will be quite the celebration! CDW has firmly established itself as the UK’s leading independent design festival and annually attracts the international design community to this small area of London for three days of exciting events.

Highlights this year include some of CDW’s most ambitious installations yet, such as The Beacon, a 7.5m tall structure located at the entrance to Design Fields and inspired by the Tower of Babel. The installation will give visitors the chance to climb up the internal staircase to a spectacular viewing platform in walking distance of the specially designed talks pavilion hosting this year’s Conversations at Clerkenwell sponsored by eporta, hosting speakers include Doshi Levien, Sadie Morgan and Jean Marie Massaud. Nearby will be Buzzijungle by Buzzispace, a playful elevated work-lounge space that visitors can climb, lounge and meet in. Meanwhile Hakwood will unveil Double Vision, a 4 meter high structural installation of recursive patterns nestled within the historic Clerkenwell Close creating an uplifting moment for visitors whilst walking the exhibition route.

St John’s Square will be home to The Bolt: A Celebration of Craft, by Detroit-based manufacturer, Shinola and London materials composer, Giles Miller. Shinola, who are heavily rooted in the preservation of craft, have collaborated with Giles Miller Studio to develop The Bolt – a cross-pond celebration of handcrafted skills, materials and products, themed around Shinola’s iconic lightning bolt motif and assembled in Miller’s signature style.

Over 90 showrooms will take part in the festival, including Pentagon Tiles who will be opening a new space on Leather Lane in collaboration with Architect Simon Astridge, Vitra will be launching a limited edition Panton Chair in ‘Sunlight’ and Milliken are to host a party night with guest DJ, legendary designer Pam Hogg.
